By the time I left for New Zealand in late April, the Pleiades star cluster was very near the Sun, disappearing below the horizon soon after sunset. For several weeks, in preparation for the two-month Fulbright residency in New Zealand, I paid attention to the cluster in the evening sky from my backyard in Lafayette, California. As I got ready to leave, I juggled the conflicting feelings of saying goodbye to my family and my excitement for the fellowship. I felt the distance between my home and Aotearoa. A separation in time and space, with different timeframes and seasons in the two hemispheres, and unique cultures that offered the opportunity for observation, reflection, and learning. On the day I left, the Moon was just past third quarter. Little did I know that the waning phase of the lunar cycle, between third quarter and new Moon, what Māori call Tangaroa, would be a positive sign, or tohu, for a new beginning.

Cuando me fui a Nueva Zelanda a fines de abril, el cúmulo estelar de las Pléyades estaba muy cerca del Sol, desapareciendo bajo el horizonte poco después del atardecer. Durante varias semanas, en preparación para la beca de residencia Fulbright de dos meses en Nueva Zelanda, presté mucha atención al cúmulo en el cielo nocturno desde mi patio en Lafayette, California. Mientras me preparaba para viajar, hice malabarismos con mis sentimientos conflictivos y con sabor agridulce de despedirme de mi familia y mi entusiasmo por la beca de investigación. La gran distancia entre mi casa y Aotearoa se presentó como algo muy real. Una separación en el tiempo y el espacio, con diferentes perídos de tiempo y estaciones en los dos hemisferios, y culturas únicas que ofrecen la oportunidad de observación, reflexión y aprendizaje. El día de mi partida, la Luna apenas había pasado el cuarto menguante. ¿Quién hubiera dicho? Pues este período entre el cuarto menguante y la Luna nueva, lo que los maoríes llaman Tangaroa y toman como una buena señal en su cultura, significaría un buen augurio, o tohu, para el comienzo de la beca.
