Amanda Gets Settled in Hamilton | Amanda se instala en Hamilton

Meeting Rose and Petal, the resident pigs at the rented cottage in Tamahere, was Amanda’s first order of business. The owners of the cottage, Jane and Han, explained that the voracious pigs can eat thousands of hazelnuts from their tree as they fall to the ground lickety split. The friendly and always-hungry pigs spent the day foraging around their enormous pen, along with many chickens. Amanda and I would pick fresh kale from the garden and feed it to Rose and Petal for breakfast. Our own breakfast included the freshest eggs and produce from the garden; but, alas, no bacon! Other welcoming activities for Amanda included a hike along the mighty Waikato river, where she hung from a tree to take care of her jetlag, and attending the second annual Māori Tech Showcase in Hamilton. We went to see my friends Kuki and Tania present their work that they are doing in partnership with Google. They showed an inspiring video of how they used Google Street View to map the island of Tonga (see video in this post). The Showcase was a fun and interactive example of Māori technology innovation that included virtual reality, emerging start-ups, cutting edge technology, Māori businesses utilizing tech for growth, drones, and game development. The full day ended with a steak dinner at the popular Lone Star restaurant, where Amanda got a chance to size up against Kuki—with contrasting effect! Amanda has an open and generous heart capable of appreciating a diversity of experiences. When people would ask her why she had come to New Zealand, she responded: “to hang out with Isabel and learn.” I am grateful for her trust and cherish her friendship.

Hacer amistad con Rose y Petal [Rosa y Petalo], las cerdas residentes en la cabaña alquilada en Tamahere, fue la primera tarea en la lista de Amanda. Amanda tiene un corazón abierto y generoso capaz de apreciar una diversidad de experiencias. Cuando la gente le preguntaba por qué había venido a Nueva Zelanda, ella respondía: “para pasar tiempo con Isabel y aprender”. Estoy agradecida por su confianza y aprecio su amistad.
