Aparna’s family, led by the enthusiasm of her two young sons, and my family, led by the enthusiasm of my oldest daughter, are highly knowledgeable fans of Tolkien’s literature. I had succeeded thus far to stay away from Hobbiton, New Zealand’s top tourist attraction that receives close to a million visitors per year. But now that Aparna was with me, there was no way to skip it! 😊 Truth be told, I am not well versed in Tolkien; it is really my daughter Elizabeth who is the expert. She even learned to write in Elvish Sindarin and Quenya, the languages that Tolkien invented for his Lord of the Rings stories. Aparna can quote form the books! I knew I was not in my element, except that I LOVE tiny things! And Hobbiton is one huge tiny village full or tiny everyday objects that are meticulously preserved. I had a lot of fun, especially petting the resident cat at the Green Dragon Inn. The day ended with another amazing kayak tour to see the glowworms in Taoranga. Aparna had the insight that the fish underwater, looking at the twinkling glowworms on the slot canyon walls, saw their own starry night constellations in the patterns of the glowing gnats. I had brought my astronomy green laser, and we were able to give an impromptu astronomical lesson to our fellow kayakers, including clear views of the Large and Small Magellanic clouds. A magical day all around.

Los dos hijos pequeños de Aparna y mi hija mayor son fanáticos de la literatura de Tolkien. Hasta ahora había logrado mantenerme alejada de Hobbiton, la principal atracción turística de Nueva Zelanda que recibe cerca de un millón de visitantes por año.
