Aparna and I visited with Arna and her son Kahurangi at their home in Hamilton so that we could continue to learn from her and share knowledge of astronomy. Arnatura Tao (Nga Puhi, Ngati Tuwharetoa, Ngati Awa) is Director and Founder of Matakite Productions Ltd. With her Mom, she developed a series of Maramataka lunar print calendars to help people live by the rhythms of the Moon. She recently completed the University of Waikato’s graduate teacher’s training program. She also celebrates Matariki, the Māori system of years and days beginning with the helical rising of the Pleiades star cluster in the southern hemisphere sky. In her words: “Matariki He Maramataka Māori (a stellar-lunar system of connection with the sky and industry) focuses awareness on the unique and personal connection we have to the rhythm of time. A journey that begins with the stars and continues through the lunar months turning the wheel of season.” She lives by the philosophy to develop and enhance community, knowledge, growth and understanding of Te reo and tikanga Māori (Māori ways) in daily life.
