Flat White | Café con leche

I would soon learn the local coffee lingo: a flat-white is like a latte; a long-black is just black coffee, I think; I did not pay much attention to it since I use milk in my coffee. My favorite local coffee shop in downtown Auckland is called Remedy, where they make delicious turmeric lattes, chai, and the popular with millennials avocado toast. My second favorite is the Eighthirty, the café inside the lobby of the OGGB. The acronym stands for “Sir Owen G. Glenn Building”—the name of Auckland University’s Business School. Here, I got my first flat white and sat down to take in the excitement of the late April graduations. It was a proud and joyous occasion for the graduates and their families, who spent time taking selfies and posing for professional portraits against the backdrop of the architecturally stunning School. The OGGB boasts a series of giant, multilayered glass waves that are anchored in the 26-meter-high (85 feet) central atrium. The shape of the building mimics an albatross in flight. The Northern Royal Albatross is the largest seabird native of New Zealand. With a wingspan of up to 3 meters (almost 10 feet), it spends most of the time at sea except when coming ashore to breed with their lifelong mate. The families gathered for their moment of celebration appeared protected under the giant bird’s wingspan.

Pronto aprendería la jerga local del café: un flat white es como un café con leche; un long black es solo café negro, creo; no le presté mucha atención, ya que uso leche en mi café. Mi cafetería local favorita en la ciudad de Auckland se llama Remedy, donde hacen deliciosos lattes de cúrcuma, chai y el popular pan tostado con palta o aguacate que le encanta a los mileniales (las personas pertenecientes a la llamada generación Y, nacidas aproximadamente en las dos últimas décadas del siglo veinte). Otra cafetería favorita es el Eighthirty. Está ubicado dentro del vestíbulo del “Edificio de Sir Owen G. Glenn”, OGGB por sus siglas en inglés. Este es el nombre de la Escuela Internacional de Negocios de la Universidad de Auckland. Aquí, compré mi primer flat white y me senté para disfrutar de la emoción de las graduaciones de finales de abril. Fue una ocasión orgullosa y alegre para los graduados y sus familias, quienes pasaron tiempo tomándose selfis y posando para fotos profesionales con la impresionante arquitectectura de la escuela de fondo. El OGGB cuenta con una serie de ondas gigantes de vidrio multicapa que se anclan en el atrio central de 26 metros de altura. La forma del edificio imita un albatros en vuelo. El albatros real del norte es el ave marina más grande de Nueva Zelanda. Con una envergadura de hasta 3 metros al extender sus alas, pasa la mayor parte del tiempo en el mar, excepto cuando llega a tierra para reproducirse con su compañero de toda la vida. Las familias reunidas para su momento de celebración parecían protegidas bajo el cuerpo del pájaro gigante en vuelo.
