Island in the Sky | Isla en el cielo

On my husband’s second birthday, I set out from Auckland to Waiheke Island on the ferry. It was a beautiful day with a sky full of whimsical clouds. Suddenly, the phrase “as above, so below” came to me. My mentor Rose von Thater-Imai had uttered these words many years ago at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, when we were there together. Te Ika a Maui—The Fish of Maui—the North Island of New Zealand, was surprisingly obvious as outlined perfectly by a cloud in the sky. I sent the photo of the cloud to Rose. She replied: “May you always walk in beauty.” I was reminded that the source of my learning would come from my relationship to place—the land, the sky, the ocean, the birds, the human beings, the plants . . . and the stars. Māori speak of kaitiakitanga, or guardianship of the land. The whakataukī: “Toitu te whenua, whatungarongaro he tangata,” “The land remains when people have disappeared,” is a sobering reminder of our collective responsibility as citizens of this planet.

En el segundo cumpleaños de mi esposo, partí de Auckland a la isla Waiheke en el ferri. Fue un hermoso día con un cielo lleno de nubes de aspecto extravagate. De repente, recordé la frase “como es arriba, es abajo”. Mi mentora Rose von Thater-Imai (Tuscarora y Cherokee) había compartido estas palabras hace muchos años en el Cañón del Chaco, Nuevo México, cuando estuvimos allí juntas. Te Ika a Maui, el pez de Maui, la isla norte de Nueva Zelanda, era sorprendentemente obvio, pues se veía delineada perfectamente en una nube en el cielo. Envié la foto de la nube a Rose. El whakataukī: “Toitu te whenua, whatungarongaro he tangata”, “La tierra permanece cuando la gente ha desaparecido”, es un recordatorio aleccionador de nuestra responsabilidad colectiva como ciudadanos de este planeta.
