Mihi Whakatau

It was time for my official greeting of welcome to the University of Auckland, which Rachel Wolfgramm arranged to be given by Anahera Morehu (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Kahu, Te Aupōuri and Te Rarawa), who is kaiārahi, or Māori cultural guide and counsellor for the institution. Anahera welcomed me with a mihi whakatau: a formal speech of greeting and official welcome. Her words, given in Te reo Māori, acknowledged my presence at the University with grace and kindness, formally opening the space for learning and working together.

Era hora de mi bienvenida oficial a la Universidad de Auckland. Rachel Wolfgramm hizo los arreglos para que Anahera Morehu (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Kahu, Te Aupōuri y Te Rarawa) se hiciera cargo. Ella es kaiārahi, guía cultural maorí y consejera de la institución. Anahera me recibió con un mihi whakatau: un discurso formal de saludo y bienvenida oficial a la tierra maorí. Sus palabras, dadas en te reo maorí, reconocieron mi presencia en la universidad con gracia y amabilidad, abriendo formalmente el espacio para aprender y trabajar juntos.
