Pou Kapua

My longtime friends and colleagues, Wikuki Kingi (QSM, Waikato-Tainui) and Tania Wolfgramm (Whakatohea, Te Aupouri, Ngai Tai, Vava’u Tonga) who is Rachel’s sister, took me to see their creation, the magnificent Pou Kapua standing tall at the Vodafone Event Center in Manukau. As the largest Māori/Pacific totem, it is an artistic and cultural treasure dedicated to local and global communities as a connective tissue for knowledge exchange. “A gift to the nation, a gift to the world.” Pou Kapua was brought to life over several years by an international team of indigenous master carvers and artists. The carvings feature Kupe, the first navigator to arrive in Aotearoa; Tangaroa, the guardian of the oceans; and Hina, the Moon. They, together with other important protagonists, tell stories of origin and migration. The Pou supports “a collective vision of cultural heritage and identity. A vision of native science, technology, and innovation brought to life—for our families, friends and communities, and indeed for the world to see and experience.”

Mis grandes amigos y colegas, Wikuki Kingi (QSM-galardonado por la medalla de servicio de la Reina, Waikato-Tainui) y Tania Wolfgramm (Whakatohea, Te Aupouri, Ngai Tai, Vava'u Tonga), la hermana de Rachel, me llevaron a ver su creación, la magnífica Pou Kapua erguida en el Centro de Eventos Vodafone en Manukau. Como el tótem maorí/pacífico más grande, es un tesoro artístico y cultural dedicado a las comunidades locales y globales como tejido conectivo para el intercambio de conocimientos. “Un regalo para la nación, un regalo para el mundo”. Durante varios años un equipo internacional de maestros y artistas talladores indígenas dio vida a Pou Kapua. Las tallas muestran a Kupe, el primer navegador en llegar a Aotearoa; Tangaroa, el guardián de los océanos; e Hina, la Luna. Ellos, junto con otros protagonistas importantes, cuentan historias de origen y migración. El Pou apoya “una visión colectiva del patrimonio y la identidad.
